Grandpa always said, "If you put that belt on them right, they won't act up again."

The First Thing To Do Is STOP TAPING HIS FACE!
The Second Thing Is Go To Your Family Doctor And Get His Hearing Assented, To Make Sure That There Is No Hearing Problems, And If Everything Is Fine You Have To Use A Better Approach To Get Your Child Listening To You.
When Your Child Acts Up And Won't Listen To You, Get Down To His Level, Look Him Straight In The Eyes ( Making Eye Contact Is The Key With young Children ) And Kindly But Firmly Ask Him To Stop. Once He's Knows That Mommy Is Serious He Will Start To listen, Just Be Patience With Him, After All He Is Just A Baby.

Watch him when he plays with his toys. Does he look from the toys to you and back to the toys, or does he play without looking at you? Either way, I say consult your doctor. Two possibilities that occur to me from your description are hearing impairment and some form or degree of autism spectrum disorder.
Both conditions require early intervention, and in the US, your local Department of Education and community organizations can get involved NOW (did I mention the *now* part?)--or at least as soon as you have a diagnosis. In either of these cases, early intervention will give your son the best shot at a decent education and a normal life. Waiting until school age would be waiting too long!

My 4 year old wont listen to me...get use to it. But on a more serious note, he is just a baby please stop taping his face. Have you tried getting down to his level? that may work better, I never spanked my daughter till she was 3 and knew what it was for. The next time he wont listen squat down in front of him and tell him what you want.

He's at the age where everything is more interesting than what Mom has to say...tell me about it! My daughter's 3 and still gets that faraway look as soon as I want to be serious with her. I do think it has gotten better since 18 months or so, but there you go. The better he gets at talking, the more he will want to argue with you, and that will help him pay attention, at least some of the time!

I don't think that your son has a hearing problem, i think it is more or less the fact that he doesn't want to listen. At almost two years you reallly cannot disipline him much, but you can still disipline him. Make him stand in the cornor or sit on the couch when he doesn't listen to you. He'll learn.

Have you had his hearing checked? My husband's parents used to spank him all the time because they thought he wasn't listening. When he was in the third grade they checked his hearing at school and found out he couldn't hear at all out of his left ear and only 10% out of his right ear. Ask your pediatrician for a referral.

Test his hearing. Use your hands in front of him to get his attention. I believe he's too young to diagnose with ADHD, so I wouldn't worry about that.
Some silly moms use the words "cookie" or "candy" to get their attention but i don't believe in that.
Play with him more and develop a trusting and friendly relationship and maybe that alone will help (not that you aren't doing that now!!)

He's age appropriate for acting that way. The best thing to do is try time outs in a chair or sofa. Put him in time out for his age. For example when my toddler or his big sis act up they get sent to time out in minutes for however old they are. (i.e; 8 yrs old = 8 mins in timeout)

Does he talk? Get his hearing checked. I think most states do it for free under 5 years old
