He has nowhere to go after August 3, 2006. He has been drinking for over 30+ years. We recently sent him to rehab but because of insurance he could only stay two weeks.Two weeks cant help anyone. He started drinking within days of getting out. He can not come live with us b/c of kids. I have tried to find him a place and we know he wont pay his bills. We want to have him committed to a mental hospital but you have to get a lawyer and we dont have the money. He will not take a bath and he is very weak. He is 65 years old also. If we dont find him a place he will live in the woods and I know he wont survive in this heat. He has been homeless before. But he is also getting older. I just need to know what else to do. depending on what state you live in there should be rehab facilities that take uninsured people. If you can show that he is an immediate danger to himself or others he can be committed against his will without a lawyer. You need to look into getting a power of attorney so you can make his medical decisions for him and place him in an appopriate facility

First of all, you need to take care of yourself. Because you have an alcoholic in your life, you should consider attending a few Al-Anon meetings. They are for anyone who's life is being affected by an alcoholic.
Secondly, you need to realize that his alcoholism is not your problem to solve. Even though it feels like it is because you care, it is still HIS problem.
His age and state of health aside, it is still his choice each time he lifts a drink to his mouth. No one is putting a gun to his head. He knows he is an alcoholic and is not seeking help for himself. He knows that.
As for possible places he can stay, I recommend you wait until he is drunk and disorderly, then call either the cops or the mental health crisis team. The cops may only hold him overnight, but the crisis team can't admit anyone who's in need of detoxification, so they will send him to the detox for 72 hrs. Once he's had 3 days of detoxing, he may be in a better state to approach him about going into rehab.
Some rehab programs run 6 mths. to 1 yr. You can locate these programs by contacting your local jails. Many jails release addicted offenders into strict and long-term rehabs.
If he leaves after all that leg work you have done, cut him loose. Not everyone wants to be saved, but God bless you for caring.

I know you said he wouldn't go, but your local VA should be able to help with getting him somewhere to live, even if they let him stay long enough to dry out. Sometimes you just have to let him hit bottom before he will ask for help. I wouldn't put him in a nursing home at all; they might kill him.
As for a lawyer, check with a lawyer's association. Maybe they'll help you, pro bono.
As for you and your husband, both of you should check out an Al-Anon group, so you can know how to deal with this disease. They'll tell you what to look out for and what to listen for, so you'll know when he's scamming you. Good luck!

sounds like my mom, lucky for her she found a husband that could take care of her. In your case there are hospitals that help homeless people, call a local comunity or city hospital, they should be able to give you advice. Somethimes local churches heve a, help your neighbor budget, call one and may be they have some advice. AA meetings are free, and all over the usa, they will be able to help you to.
