My friend's 6 year old son has terminal cancer. He has been bravely fighting this disease for two years and his mother has been unable to work due to her son's treatment schedule. She also has a two year old daughter that she must shuffle back and forth to caretakers while she is in the hospital (an hour away from home) with her sick boy. Six months ago, her car was repossesed for non-payment because she couldn't afford it. She receives only enough assistance from the government to pay for rent and some bills. A local cancer charity has allowed her the use of a car to get back and forth to treatments, but that won't last forever. We just got news that her son has two to six months to live and I'm sure she won't be able to go back to work right away. Any suggestions?

Check with salvation army and st vincent depaul.

And ... here is what I would do ... call the local newspaper and tell them the story and the need .... if they do a story on her plight, I am sure she will find someone/s who will donate a car or towards a car for her.

So many agencies are there to help, it's just so hard to find them. Try Catholic Charities. Try the United Way. Try the Shriners. Try the Hope Foundation.

Call the local TV, the newspaper, any media that is prominent, get her problem out there for your community to hear... we are all here to help each other, and it does happen. Write to Ford - Chevrolet - heck, even Porsche - and see if they want the tax write off and the publicity for assisting a fellow family in need. Depending on where you live, write your congress person and say, hey, we need to do this for this family. It's the right thing to do.

Start a fund or charity drive. Go to the local bank. Set up an account through them free of charge to deposit funds to help pay medical bills, expenses, get a car, and whatever she may need.

Even contact Krispy Kremes - they do oodles of fund raising work.

Post what "we" the general public in Yahoo Answers can do. If we all sent even one dollar, she'd have the car and extra to pay for the costs that we know will happen, and the time she needs to regroup without worry about money - it won't replace her son, but no one can do that.

Just get the word out.

I don't know of anywhere to look for a car through charitable organization that have not already been offered as answers.

There are organizations that will help with driving you though. Check with the Shriners. They have a team of drivers here in Vancouver, BC that help shuttle cancer patients back and forth to the clinic. They also have hospitals for sick children if you are interested.

There use to be a National Kidney Foundation that would donate cars but I think the AMERICAN CANCER FOUNDATION would be a candidate as well as the UNITED WAY!
