There is no one best medication. Different people respond to different ones. Sometimes a combination of drugs is best for that person. Personally, Prozac did nothing for me. Zoloft has been great so far. A friend of mine had really bad side effects with Zoloft and is doing well on Prozac. Speak to your doctor, and don't give up if one drug doesn't work. It can take some time to find the right drug and dose for you.

How a medication effects someone else is not necessarily the same effect it will have on you. Your attending Physician is the best person to question about different anti-depressants and he/she may still tell you it's a trial and error process. Anti-depressants take time to work properly they are not a quick-fix it to depression. I've been on one or the other since I was 17, there have been some that were effective for a while and then we would try something else or a combination of meds. Your doctor needs to perform some test on you before and during treatment......be patient.......and follow your doctors advice, if you don't like the way a medicine makes you feel let the doctor know right away.
Good Luck

The best antidepressant is the one which works for you with the minimum of side-effects.
Tricyclic antidepressants (e.g. Amitriptyline or Doxepin)are effective and cheap but are more dangerous in overdose and can have more side effects.
SSRI (e.g. Fluoxetine, Paroxetine or Sertraline) are generally safer with less intrusive side-effects but still don't suit everyone.
Others such as Mirtazepine, Venlafaxine or Moclobemide are equally effective and may be more suitable for some people.
The most important thing is that ALL antidepressants take at least 2 weeks to be effective so must be taken regularly and long-term.
Some can increase the risk of suicide as symptoms of despair and sadness can take longer to improve than lack of motivation.
Antidepressants should be combined with counselling and should only be prescribed by experienced physicians.

Play sports instead of video games, eat right, and exercise. Read and find interests in various things and activities. Keep your mind and body busy. Preventative medicine is the best medicine. Most medications have long term adverse effects on one's liver and other organs. Don't just solve the "symptoms," solve the problem of the symptoms.

I think they all are different. I work in a hospital and the psychiatrist comes in to round in the am and tells us to open the blinds and let the sunshine in. Psych pts are not allowed to sleep in the daytime. We open their blinds and let the daylite gaze on their face. They are expected to get up shower and go to physical therapy. Exersize and sunshine has a profound effect on the human spirit. True story.

I had good results with Effexor, BUT it made it impossible for me to have sex. Completely uninterested, unable to orgasm.....it sucked
I switched to welbutrin which has no sexual side effects, and no weight gain
BUT
It gives me really bad anxiety
You really can't win them all...........All antidepressants have side effects, there really is no perfect pill
