At least one answer to every question here on Yahoo Answers that I've read so far has text messaging abbreviations, bad spelling, poor grammar, lack of punctuation, run-on sentences (like this one ;-), a combination of all of the preceding maladies, or some other characteristic that I find hard to read. Do you think it makes these answers unreadable or at least harder to read?

[Personally, I cannot wait for speech recognition software to become ubiquitous (it works well now) so that no one has to type on those tiny little 'keyboards' on phones, no typing and thus no more typographical errors, etcetera. I know this may be a bit 'Pollyanna' of me, and I do have high hopes for speech recognition and translation software.]

You are absolutely right. If you want good answers to your question you need to ask it in a way that people can understand. Also if you want your answer to be taken seriously you should make sure it makes sense.

Kimberly, I agree with you. Most of these people do not know how to spell, they have poor grammar, they do not use punctuation and they have run-on sentences. They also use text message abbreviations.

Many of these questions are hard to read or just unreadable. Oftentimes, I just skip the poorly worded, bad grammar, bad spelling questions, regardless of the interest they may have for me.
Speech recognition softlware might help typing speed. They might recognize peoples voices and type what is said, but do you really want to hear how illiterate and stupid some of these morons really are. Their writing is atrocious, just imagine having to hear how they speak?!?!? YIKES!!!! it also shows that some English teachers have failed in their jobs of teaching grammar and these students who are supposed to be taught are extremely lazy. It shows how lazy Americans are academically. It is no wonder that we have a work force that is 85% incompetent on the job.

A study has been done that people who read well can recognize the words if only the first and last letter are in the correct place. The other letters can be scrambled and we still know what it is.
I struggle on a laptop keyboard and have to go back and correct frequently.
There are some versions of shorthand I can follow, but sometimes it just gets too esoteric.
Hey, not all of us are 20 years old or younger!

For some people anyway. I deal with applications all day and I am used to misspellings, poor grammar, as well as abbreviations. So, when I see that sort of thing, I think nothing of it and I can clearly understand it.

I agree, it may be that too many shortcuts from Chat and Txt, are doing the damage. But I think, our education system isn't turning out literate students.
I'm sure the younger ones, are trying to be cool, with their shortcuts, but some are jist totally unreadable.

i really dont think it matters to an extent, as long as you can read what they want to know. i always type like this because i no that it doesnt matter to an extent. i do think people need to really see how the spelling comes out in a word or just slow down typing. like ex. it wsa a realyy bad semll adn i cuoldnt stadn it!!! ( it was a really bad smell and i couldnt stand it!!!) i

It's not only about the spelling, if you just tried to understand also with your feelings and use a little bit your brain you can figure out the words.

yes they do. and some of these comments indicate more time then mere text messaging... so all the blame can't be put on the tiny keypads.... I've tried to use my phone to text messsage or send email and the process is time consuming (and expensive!)

no, because there are so many people who are from difference countries. So, abbreviation is a good way to give their mean. for example i am Iranian and can't speak English.
