Hi,
I have a toy poodle and I bought her at three months. She is lively, fun, relaxed, playful and cuddly with me and my fiance. When she goes to the park with us and for walks she gets very scared of people and tries to run away, practicaly choking herself because she pulls so hard!

Today she pooped herself because two little children were running at her and wanted to pet the 'little puppy'.

She was even scared of my Grandma when she met her and hid under a pillow until she left! Does anybody else have a dog that is like that? I think the smaller breeds can be a little picky. Is this normal and if not, why is she scared of people? I am planning on taking her to obediance school so she can interact with other dogs but Im scared of what she'll do.

Puppies need to be socialized around people and other dogs when they are young if you want them to get along when they are grown. Try taking your dog to obedience class to get him used to other dogs and people. Keep it up! Eventually it will help her by being around others and you will have a very well behaved dog as an additional bonus. She may always be a chicken but the more she is acclimated to others the better off you will all be.

Toy poodles were bred down from the Standard size poodle. It stands to reason, that their courage and intelliegence also shrank.

On the official list of "smarts" in 140 canine breeds; the Border Collie is #1, the Standard Poodle is #2...and the toy is wayyyyy down the list. And my sisters; Chow is # 139 !!

if you got it from a pet store, then it's most likely going to be scared of everything. pet store pups have a bad past and don't forget easily. two words: puppy mills. look it up. and everything you read is real.

but if you didn't get it from a pet store, then it probably just has a an anxiety problem. dogs have problems just like humans. there's not much you can do unless you give it time or try to train it to be lively and friendly.
hope it works out.

Maybe she just isn't used to being around other people and they are a nervious breed to start with. I had one and she didn't like other people that much either ,but she wasn't around them much.Good luck with your baby. This is not uncommon with your dog. Give her a big hug and kiss from me.

she is not trying to be disobedient, she IS smaller than every thing in the world. that's scary stuff!. spec. when its new stuff. try holding her for meeting new people. and don't expect her to do all the BIG dog stuff. you wanted a tiny dog. treat her like a tiny dog. :)
