My first was an old Toyota pick-up and man did that thing get me through. Personally, I'm a fan if it's not American, more specifically, Toyota and Honda. I have a Toyota Echo (Vitz, in Japan) and I want the new model, the Yaris. You can get a new one for pretty cheap, around 10k. They are cute, fun, and effecient. I haven't had an ounce of trouble with my older model since I bought it 4 years ago (it's 6 years old now ;_;). I am also very much in love with the old Honda CRX. That's my second pick. They are so small and fun!! Better for a first car since there are no new ones, just older ones so they are cheaper and when you wreck it you won't feel so bad. ^_^

I assume, since you are in High School, that you are looking used. I would not go with a used Hyundai....new ones are fine.

Used car best bets for you would be a late '90s Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla.

www.edmunds.com or www.vehix.com have some very good information for researching this question.

I would suggest getting a Kia, there is a 10 year/100k warranty basically bumper to bumper warranty and they are not so full of themselves that they are charging the proverbial arm and a leg... if there is a chance you might be able to learn how to drive a stick you should as these types of autos get the best mileage. This is most convenient for young/broke students...
As for size that is another question you have to consider, two doors is great for mileage, but not so great for taking friends with you. Though most states now have a rules about the number of students that can be in a vehicle now...for sure this is so in Texas...
Dont go for a sportscar though...no no no...hehehehe
Good luck and I hope you enjoy what ever it is you get.

Hondas and Toyotas are simply the most reliable, best value vehicles. Period.

I like Toyotas for their lower maintenance costs over Hondas.

A Toyota Tacoma truck would be a great vehicle. Practical, great resale, and extremely versatile. Compact trucks are great for fun, work, moving (to college, first apartment, etc), helping friends move, making money hauling stuff, etc.

I would recommend a used Toyota Corolla or a used Honda Civic. Great value for your money and you won't be disappointed a bit. I have a 1996 Toyota Corolla Dx and it still runs great. You will also get great fuel economy.

Honda civics are good. The Honda CR-V is really reliable and fuel efficient.. But if you want a really fast and cheap car try to find any used Chevy Camaros or Pontiac Firebirds in your area.
