is it a newer camera then you could use one of two connection the first one is the UBS like you said if it isn't working you might have not installed the driver on the computer it should come with some software to make it work if not then look for a port called iLink it doesn't need and driver and will work right away with any computer that has it find on your camcorder and then see if your computer has the same port the iLink is the better out of the two it was designed by Sony and meant for transferring video

Here is a link to help you see what iLink looks like

You might want to consult the user's manual, but after connecting the camcorder, you want to make sure the camcorder is powered on (playback mode). Then you can use Windows MovieMaker software built into Windows XP to transfer the video.

There are other software utilities out there that can help you do even more such as Adobe After Effects (or Adobe Premiere for advanced editing).

Since you mentioned that your camcorder has this usb thing, then it is understood that you can connect your camcorder directly to the computer thru usb port.

Follow my simple steps.
Connect the camcorder to the computer using the usb cable. Power on your camcorder & computer. open your windows movie maker, then follow the 1,2,3 steps shown (capturing, editing & finishing). And it's DONE - tell me it's that easy!!
cheers!

You can pick up a video transfer adapter at any major electronics or computer store that lets you connect any video source to a USB input on your computer.

The easiest way, is to connect the video/audio output sockets (from the camera) to the video/audio input sockets to a DVD recorder. All you really need is are the correct AV cables.
