I'm a Midwest transplant in Texas. I absolutely adore NYC and have done the tourist thing. Empire State Building, Natural History museum, Chinatown, Macy's etc. I'll be staying at the Times Square Marriot for a week which will take up my life savings. I want to be right in the middle of things. What is the best use of my time? I'm 55 and my son is 19. A poetry reading? A gallery opening? The pickle vendor? Argue with a taxi driver? Tai Chi in Central Park? I want to feel like a true New Yorker for one week. How can I feel the true spirit and essence of New York on a budget?

I am a life-long New Yorker.

Go to the Green Market in Union Square....get food and have lunch right there.

Take a ride on the Staten Island Ferry.

Walk over the Brooklyn Bridge....on the Brooklyn Side go to

Grimaldi's for Pizza

Go to the Cloisters.

Go to MOMA on a Friday afternoon...when its free.

Go shopping in Century 21.

Go to Astoria for Greek food. Try Taverna Klyclides on Ditmars...take the R train to the last stop...its about 2 blocks away.

Walk around the Lower East Side....thats where the locals hang.

Walk...walk...walk...

Have a dirty water dog from a street vendor.

Take the subway.

Have fun.

Definitely walk through Central Park, take it all in. It is breath-takingly beautiful, it really is.

Also for a poetry reading you can check out the Bowery Poetry Lounge, I think the cover charge is like 8 or 10 bucks but its pretty cool there. If you have any poetry of your own your name can be put on the list and you get in for free, thats what my teacher told me, he emcees there on Saturdays.

get a Metrocard and just get lost in the city...hop on and off random subway stops and just explore the neighborhoods. Who knows...maybe you'll discover something (restaurant, boutique, art gallery, etc.) that you'll wanna share with us! Have fun and be safe!
