it depends. I heard of strory somewhat like your question, he had to fix all his official documents before he was granted / allowed to be she.
Technically sex change doesn't change the root of the person - he might have changed his name / sex , etc but what documents would he show to authenticate his existence? Basically the person he is now doesn't exist.
Although for the family he/she could be anything he wants.
I suggest he fix his documents to make it official
