Little story. We wintered in Florida a couple of winters ago and spent about two weeks in the Keys, ten days of which were in Key West. We took one of those bus tours on one of our first days to begin getting a 'lay of the land' of Key West.

During the tour, the narrator asked if anyone noticed all the porch ceilings were painted a light blue color? It was silent as we waited for the other shoe to drop. You ready?

The ceilings are painted light blue to resemble the sky. This is done, not for the aesthetic value, but to 'trick' spiders, flies and other insects thereby detering them from making their homes up there. The result is less cleaning.

Bolonga? Wives tale? It works!

Verification of hypothesis: My parents have a gazebo in their backyard and wanted to paint the ceiling. I told them of this bit of information shared on the bus ride and immediately admitted, I don't know if it works or not!

The ceiling was painted blue. Not the closest match to the color of the sky. But blue, non-the-less. This was last summer.

Guess what! After a year, there are NO spider webs. NO fly stains etc. Nothing! It works. Paint it blue and pass this along!

To resemble a blue sky. I've even seen some with vines and branches stenciled or painted on them to give the feel of being outside. My porch ceiling was painted a dark, ugly shade of green when I moved in. When I painted it a light, light blue it felt so much more open and airy out there.
