The shot is not any more painful than any other kind of shot or needle stick. Usually they put an anesthetic in with the steroid to numb the area (to deaden whatever pain is causing you to get the shot in the first place). If they pump it in fast, it may cause a lump which will be tender until it is absorbed.

Be warned, if you have diabetes, hypoglycemia or other blood sugar imbalance, the shot may unbalance your sugars from immediately to about a week later.

If you want an honest answer, I will share my experience. I have had two injections. One was in my shoulder and it wasn't too bad...on a pain scale of 0-10....)10 God awful...)....it was probably a 3-4....but then I had one in my right knee...and even though it was only a few seconds, the pain was took my breath away...it was horrible. I later learned that the doctor was being sued for all kinds of malpractice....who would have known???...so I am going to chalk that bad experience to poor technique. Do consider the fact though,,,that a cortisone injection can deposit crystals....around the tissue involved...so think twice or three times about it....Sincerely, Miriam

I have had two cortizone shots. One in my wrist and one in my elbow. The elbow was a piece of cake, the doctor was in and out I didn't even realize he was done. The wrist was pretty uncomfortable it took a while to get medicine to spread throughout the entire wrist.

Good luck!!

It just hurts like a regular shot...but it makes you feel better. I had one for a back injury.

haven't had one but I know they will give you a local and/or IV sedation and it isn't that bad.
