A jet has jet engines. Most other commercial flights use turbo-prop engines. There are a few types of different jets, but basically, instead of an extermal propeller, jet engines have internal "fans" that compress the outside air, accelerate and compress it to push the aircraft through the air.
Most turboprops have extermal propellers in front of the engines, except for a few called pusher turboprops, where the propellers are behind the engines..
Jets generally are much faster, but Piaggio has changed that equation, as has the new series of Very Light Jets coming to market, that will only make about 300-350 kts. Both the Piaggio and the new EADS 850 can clear 300 kts, but the EADS is slower, more cramped, and much prettier than the Piaggio.
Jets also can fly higher, and with less wind resistance attain higher speeds.
The newer jet aircraft average 300-400 kts, against which there is an equation to compare the speed of the air you are travelling through, and adjust accordingly. If you are making 340 kts indicated air space but flying against a 50 kt wind, you will make a little better than 290 kts. Alternatively, flying with the wind will increase your ground speed.
Some commercial jets, but generally private jets(Gulfstreams and the Cessna X, for examples), can approach the speed of sound, which varies depending on altitude. Some military jets can travel faster than sound(mach1 is the speed of sound).
Turboprops are generally slower, and tend to make about 200 to 250 kts, before adjusting for wind speed. Turboprops get better fuel economy. Turboprops can also takeoff and land from more runways than a jet, because a jet has to have a lot of runway to get fast enough to take off, and has to have a safety margin on the runway. Most Turboprops can land at over 5000 runways, while jets are limited to a few hundred.
Those above speeds are for cruising altitudes, they travel a bit slower getting to altitude.
Jets are better and safer in most cases, if they serve the airports you wish to use.

A 'jet' is a puddle jumper, lucky to have 12 seats. And cheaper to run back and forth for short flights. A Normal flight is usually a 3/2 seater and used for the longer flights.

Today, a jet is a 'normal' flight. The vast majority of all commercial flights are jet powered.

a jet engine compresses air, ignites it and pushes it out the back for propulsion. a "normal flight" (assuming prop) is very much like a car engine except instead of a drive shaft it has a prop that 'propels' the aircraft.

Avi8ing, thank God you're kidding about flying airplanes for a living. A jet "compresses air and ignites it"? That's funny. If you were serious I would be worried.
