Technology found a way to pack paint into tubes...giving artists their first chance to paint in the open air. Because of the quickly changing nature of Nature, they ended up having to paint rapidly, and relying more on their overall impressions of a scene. Their works came out much differently than when they painted an imagined scene in the studio. or what a photograph revealed.
