I was, oh it was terrible.
I had to attend weekly meetings where they chanted many of the same phrases over and over. Even my education was co-opted and colored by their agenda. We were discouraged from any real outward sign of jubilation, and we had to give a good chunk of our money to the organization or risk being ostracized. *shudder*
But somehow I have the feeling that a lot of people are going through what I went through....

Yes. I was a Jehovah's Witness at one time. I was born one, but my parents quit when I was 12, and for many years we searched for another religion, bumping around in the dark trying to find our way. My mother had been a Catholic as a girl, and so we looked into that. It was slow starting at first, but finally, I learned my Catholic faith like I'd never known it before and my life has not been the same since. I love Jesus with all my heart, and my only sadness is that I fail to live up to His love every day of my life.
I still wear the scars from those experiences, but I have learned move past them and get on with the Faith; It has healed me tremedously. It's amazing how different life is when the light of Jesus finally brightens everything. It's almost inconcievable how dark everything was before then. I think about that alot, but I'm thankful each day that I've finally found the right path. I thank God for that everyday, and sincerely hope the same for others that have been through the same pain.
Jesus will show the light. Never stop hoping and never stop praying. Let Him take you by the hand. It will be the beginning of the rest of your life.
God bless.

Good question... I was in a cult like church... I say cult "like" because it isn't formally recognized as a cult but it was pretty much the same... anyway I was born into a family who practice that religion and I pretty much grew up in it. It wasn't the best experience by any means... in fact looking back it was pretty harmful... The picture I had of God was very legalistic... a cosmic kill joy waiting in anger to correct my every mistake...
I got out by meeting people who believed different things and doing some research for myself... I'm still very hurt and angry and resentful... it is nothing short of spiritual abuse...
I have difficulty with my faith and with worship as a result now but I'm working through it... I still consider myself a Christian and I just keep focusing on God's grace and mercy...

I hope you realize that the word "cult" simply means "a following of people". Thus, all religions and beliefs are cults.
So, you can answer you're own question, I'm sure. How does it feel to be in what ever belief you observe?

I was in a cult.
It wasn't a cult when I started in it.
It became a cult later.
I refused to move with the cult when they went underground and their babies died because they don't believe in Medicine or Doctors.
The God found me for real. He talks to me in person and so does his "kid" also three angels live with me and their spirit pet.
They don't pay rent but I like them so I let them stay. The spirit animal doesn't eat or poop and he/she/it is cuddly and I like it too.
So now I'm happy and I don't force my beliefs on anyone else.

Catholicism. My experience was boring/disappointing. Was born into it. Not resentful, I'm over it.
