The weather is usually low 80s to high 70s and its gorgeous. Like many answers you can never really go wrong with a little black dress. I don't know what type of place the rehearsal dinner is taking place but go with a look that can be versatile. Wear some nice dress pants with a comfortable shoe and a nice blouse. No one says you have to wear a dress. Whatever you do be comfortable in what you wear. That way you can focus on the joy of the wedding and not the pain of your clothes. Dresses are always nice to wear to weddings and I am guessing its probably a formal wedding so go with something a little more dressed up. Wear your hair up a little with small jewelry that compliments your style. If you don't like to wear black, red can be a stunning color and very abundant in the fall. San Fran has some wonderful shopping so take a look around. As long as you are comfortable and feel good about the way you look its all that matters.

The best dress for dinner is the little black dress with slippers and some nice bling jewelry not overdone. For the wedding wear a nice pastel dress with subtle bling and a strand of pearls. Don't outdress the bride. Wear comforable dresses that will not kill you if it is hot as it usually is in August even in San Francisco.

Unleses you have plans to change clothse after the wedding, wear something summerish. Dress like you would for church in the summer. Maybe a summer dress and a very light, very thin jacket or vest. You want to not only look good, but also to feel comfortable. Misery is never necessary!

A white, fine bluse and a blue skirt would be simple and would also have a modern look. Otherwise, try a plain, black dress, like someone has already suggested. It's perfect for any formal occasion.
