i want a new home theater system, but i am confused on which is best, can someone please help me choose, i need about 1200 watts, and a built in DVD player, and five speakers plus a powerful sub. if you own a system with amazing sound and thundering base that you are very impressed with please let me know, thanks very much. P.S. if you know what is so special about panasonic's "360 surround", let me know, and is it worth it.

Panasonic is good, but not the best IMHO, but for $500, you are limited to either quality OR quantity -not both. When you're looking for power, don't consider total (i.e. 1,200) watts, focus on (i.e. 100 is an excellent amount for your price point) watts per channel and into 8 Ohms.

Look to Onkyo (doesn't come with a built-in DVD player), Yamaha (comes with a DVD player, although not built-in), JVC, Denon, Harmon/Kardon for a complete system that is as close as possible to what you wanting to accomplish.

It's virtually impossible to meet all of your criteria, but perhaps your best chance will be to look for unique deals on online auction sites (eBay, uBid, AudiogoN, etc.). However, if you're looking for a store that will sell you a complete system (i.e. HTIB), here are several links for you to consider...

Happy listening!

First, you cant shop by wattage because it is not accurate, every manufacturer judges their wattages differently, test a system by putting it on the same source as the rest and turning it up, see how loud it gets before it starts to distort and sound bad. Keep in mind, if it doesnt get very loud with the radio it will be very low with dvd's. LG makes a decent unit around 500$ that has a digital coaxial input and an optical input so you can get surround sound from both a gaming system and your High Definition TV. Stay away from panasonic systems or any system that doesnt have an optical input. The best systems will usually have the speaker wire coming out of the subwoofer, if you want to spend a little more money you can get some better higher end systems from brands like Yamaha. If you want to buy a dvd player seperately for around 70$, then you can get a decent system from Yamaha YHT-370 for around 400$ thats way better than any all in one system. Something you can upgrade in the future, sounds better to begin with and something that is built much better.

You can find the system I mentioned on http://www.bestbuy.com

I have the Panasonic SC-HT730 home theatre system which I bought for about $325 a year ago. It's only an 800W RMS system, but it's rather impressive. This is my 3rd home theatre system, and by far the best. The progressive scan DVD player plays DVD-R/RW and DVD+R just fine.

You probably can't find this model anymore, but Panasonic has updated the product line since. I believe the current home theatre systems they have out there are 1000, 1100, and 1200W systems for under $500. I highly recommend you check the brand out. I couldn't be more satisfied with mine.

I don't know much about speakers and home theater, but you're not gonna get much for $500. A good dvd player will run you at least $150, and a seperate sub will cost aroun $200.

500 will get u an "ok" system nothing special, wattage on these systems dont mean shyt so i wouldnt worry about it.
If u want thundering bass ull need a powered sub, 500$ systems dont come with those, jus save ur money for a better system.
