The internet is a great source, but it was pretty much basically the "natural" (Afro), the "press and curl", and braids were the fashion.

The 'fro (or afro) was THE style. It was so popular that caucasions would mimic the style by getting a super tight perm and then "picking" it out.

See if your local library or college library has magazines like ebony directed to african americans going back to that time period.
Contact reference libarian for new york public libary or your local libary (most libaries let you do this by e mail and ask that question)
