If you are talking about the classroom environment, some great tools are: the ITERS (Infant/Toddler Environmental Rating Scale) and ECERS (Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale). These both address the environments and materials in your classroom. If you are talking about observing your children, there are several types of observations you can do. Running Records are a minute-by-minute detail of everything you SEE. Anecdotal Records are a synopsis of an event- a story of what happened. Checklists are exactly what they sound like... a checklist of specific items you are looking for (these usually cover a broad spectrum of behaviors). Another is a time sampling... you look for a specific behavior during specified time frames. If you want to alter behaviors, look for a behavior modification plan. It will give you a plan to follow when a child has a behavior (biting, hitting, kicking) you want to eliminate. If you need an administrative observation tool, the Program Administration Scale can help. If you are looking for a developmental assessment to monitor the children's growth and progress, the Desired Results Developmental Profile will help you assess your children's development. Hope this helps!
