No. He wasn't. But he IS a great architect in the US during his time. There are a lot of famous architects. Different architects, different style. You see Frank Lloyd Wright influenced us by creating the "open space" planning (i.e., without the use of much partition), organic architecture. But Frank Gehry is an innovator, a deconstructivist, Norman Foster is a great designed which uses passive cooling, Antoni Gaudi is famous for being really organic in his organic architecture. Walter Gropius was famous for his Bauhaus. Even Hippodamus of the Greeks was great, he introduced urban planning. And don't you forget Imhotep. There is much more on the list: Zaha Hadid, Mies van de Rohe, Alvar Aalto, I.M. Pei etc., etc... all which have contributed much to the improvement of Architecture.

I think that is a matter of preference. But I can tell you that I have loved visiting his "Hollyhock house" here in L.A. since I was a child. The dining room chairs with the hollyhock deco art motif climbing up the backs was something that i will always remember. His daughters room with a view of a little running stream, very princess like. The beautiful mauve colored tile, like the color of hollyhocks,in front of the main fire place are beautiful too.He is my moms favorite.

just my opinion but I would think that the men(people?) who designed the ancient 7 wonders of the world would be more in line for that. granted most were engineering feats and artistic but there was also the Library at Alexandria.

Phidias, the designer of the Parthenon, probably surpassed him, but isn't it a little silly to try to compare genius at this level?
