I understand this question, as I live with its reality every day. Yes, the military members love and miss their families. It can be excruciating on them to be gone for long periods of time. My own husband had to leave for an entire year when our second daughter was only 3 months old. He was angry and hurt. We have actually dealt with many separations, from a week to a year, and several 3 to six month deployments. But at the end of the day, he pledged and oath, signed a contract, had a commitment to fulfill, and clearly understood the importance of his job. He did the best that he could do as a soldier, to the best of his ability to serve our country...something nearly every soldier prides him/herself in. There were days it was extremely difficult, but he made it through, same as we on the home front do. There comes a time you MUST put yourself aside and do what needs to be done to make it through the challenging times. That's the mark of integrity and adulthood.

Everyone, military or not, miss their families when their jobs take them away from families. Private sector people who move across coast & go 6 months to years not seeing their families miss them no matter how much they love their jobs. The military just understands it could cost them their lives or the lives of others to dwell on missing their family.

Good question. I was in the air force 18 years. Whenever I deployed--for the first week or two--I really missed my family. After that, you get somewhat comfortable in you surroundings and find things to take your mind off things. In most cases morale calls are allowed sometimes daily to back home so at least we can keep in touch.

There is a quote that says "A soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him."

It is devastating when you have to leave your loved ones, or when you are left behind by a loved one who is deploying. But, things like Honor, Courage, Duty, and Service to Others mean something to these men and women, and so, as painful as it is to leave, they do it BECAUSE the love them, not because they don't.

Look at it like this - does a policeman or a fireman not love their families? They risk their lives every day to serve their communities, and do their part to make them better and safer, for everyone, including the families they love - right?

Same with the military - they love their families, but they want to make their community safer for everyone, including their families, and sometimes that means they have to go away.

There is a Christmas song that explains it very well - it's called Sailing Home for Christmas by Doug Stone.

It says:
They looked out their windows at the ocean that surrounds them

In the service of their country, sailing to a foreign shore.
Tomorrow will be Christmas, and they wish that they could be home.

Their wives and children need them, but their country needs them more.

But they'll be sailing home for Christmas, sailing home for Christmas,

Where a welcome candle in the window gleams.

They'll be sailing home for Christmas, sailing home for Christmas,
Sailing home for Christmas in their dreams.

Tomorrow, they'll serve turkey and they'll sing the Christmas carols,
They'll talk about their families, their mothers and their sons.

It's the strangest contradiction, singing songs of peace and sharing

As they man the battle stations, hoping war will never come.

But they'll be sailing home for Christmas, sailing home for Christmas,

Where a welcome candle in the window gleams.

They'll be sailing home for Christmas, sailing home for Christmas,

Sailing home for Christmas in their dreams.

And maybe someday they won't have to be there anymore,
When we all start to live the things we have Christmas for.

They'll be sailing home for Christmas, sailing home for Christmas,

Where a welcome candle in the window gleams.
They'll be sailing home for Christmas, sailing home for Christmas,

Sailing home for Christmas in their dreams.

I know this is a long post, but, if you truly meant your question (and didn't just mean it as a "dig" against the military and their families), then I hope this helps you understand a little better.

I feel sorry for a lot of men and women in any type of military. A lot of them are in it FOR their families. I feel bad for them because I've had quite a few friends whose spouses have divorced them while they were deployed.
