If it is particularly hot, the puppy will drink the water to stay cool.
If it is not that hot, then let the owner know- the dog may have diabetes. Yes, animals can have diabetes just like humans can.

You're not being specific on "excessive"

It could mean the dog is thirsty.

it could be a nervous reaction to a "new person" human babies like to drink/nurse when a situation is unsettling as a means of comfort.

it could also indicate a UTI ( unrinary tract infection) or bladder infection. Hard to tell with the little present Hx you gave.

If it's a male dog might be watching you in the bikini, know I had to get a drink when saw the pic. LOL

Probably just that its hot outside and is their only way to cool down since they have no sweat glands and lose a lot of moisture panting. Hope this helps ;)

Labs are notorious for drinking alot of water. I have a chocolate 7 month old lab and she drinks ALOT of water. It's her way of cooling herself down. She sits and pants alot, so I guess her mouth gets dry. Hope this helps.

Is he drinking excessively after running around? or maybe he is just excited to see a stranger? just let him drink, make sure the water come back out though. not going potty after drinking might be a sign of illness. If it persist, feed him glucose water. (mix syrup with water)

If its hot, he is probably just a little dehydrated. Labs do drink a lot as well.

Who are you to decide his water drinking is excessive?

I think he knows how much water he wants better than you do.

Have the vet check him for diabetes. I had a Doxie that devoloped it and sadly died. She took the shots of insulin, but, it was uncontrollable, she was 8 years old.
