When I say I am a Christian — by Maya Angelou

When I say ... "I am a Christian"
I'm not shouting "I'm clean livin'."
I'm whispering "I was lost,
Now I'm found and forgiven."

When I say ... "I am a Christian"
I don't speak of this with pride.
I'm confessing that I stumble
and need Christ to be my guide.

When I say ... "I am a Christian"
I'm not trying to be strong.
I'm professing that I'm weak
And need His strength to carry on.

When I say ... "I am a Christian"
I'm not bragging of success.
I'm admitting I have failed
And need God to clean my mess.

When I say ... "I am a Christian"
I'm not claiming to be perfect,
My flaws are far too visible
But, God believes I am worth it.

When I say ... "I am a Christian"
I still feel the sting of pain.
I have my share of heartaches
So I call upon His name.

When I say ... "I am a Christian"
I'm not holier than thou,
I'm just a simple sinner
Who received God's good grace, somehow

I wish more Christians would think the way Ms. Angelou does about her spirituality. Many DO speak of it with pride. Many DO brag, and many DO think they are perfect. Sad, but true. Blessed be and the poem is very nice.

Not caring. I am not weak, do not need to be forgiven, not lost. I am proud, and do not need a guide. What Christians think is that they are the best, are perfect, and must tell everyone else they are wrong.

It doesn't really help someone who would be confused about Christianity, i am a god believing person, and that is a cute poem, I was once Wicca, my dad forced christian religion on me and when I grew up I accepted it. I understood it. The poem is true but it doesn't help confusion.

I never thought of it that way.....definitely food for thought! I have God in my heart....and need his guidance every step of the way....without him my life is meaningless. I stumbled upon this question and was curious to what your explanation was...this poem perfectly summarizes Christianity. Thank you so much for sharing....sincerely...

That's beautiful. I'm not Christian, but I have a lot of respect for people who present their faith this way-not telling me how i should be, but telling me how they are so I can choose to follow their example or find my own way through the ocean.

Some people need religion, more power to you. From my perspective, its a distorted worldview...a fanciful way of looking at the world to keeping us from the harsh reality. I envy your outlook and i wish that my critical and logical mind would overlook the grim reality....

Don't forget that there are those who think, say and do the very same essentially, but have another faith. All different religions have a lot in common really.
