for a free credit report for whatever 30 days or the small print is. Is it smart to get this a few times in 30 days then cancel the service? Does this hurt your credit rating? We have great credit but we have not looked at it in over a year so I want to make sure we are still in the excellent credit "zone". Thanks!!!

You really should check your credit report at least once a year even if you have great credit. http://www.freecreditreport.com/ is the URL where you get the govt-mandated free reports. You are entitled to a report from all 3 reporting agencies once a year.

But what I chose to do is stagger my requests so that I can get a report every 4 months or so. If you get report A and there is nothing bad on it, why waste the other 2 reports.

It doesn't hurt your credit but they will still ask for a credit card and you will end up charged for a service of some kind, either magazines you never wanted or a credit protection service.
Do yourself a favor and contact the credit bureaus directly, you can get 1 free report from each one per year.
The big three are:
Transunion
Equifax
Experian

If you check your credit you should only do so once a year. Usually if you check on your own annualy it is discarded and then will not effect your score. A Free Credit Report online can be good, but you just need to make sure you aren't signing yourself up for a program you may not want/need. Make sure if it's something you need to cancel you do so in the alloted time given.
