The answer to your question is - Yes, you do have to give a best man speech at your brother's wedding. In fact, the toast from the best man is VERY traditional and is the FIRST toast given by anyone. The best man's speech is not seen as a way to "be a part of a show," as it happens at every single wedding whether it was held at a fancy club or in a swamp. And it has nothing to do with your brother's wife's family AT ALL - it has to do with YOU AND YOUR BROTHER, which is why it's so significant. There are soooo many people who hate public speaking (a huge percentage of the population) and the secret to doing it is preparation. There are many websites who can guide you into writing a decent, short "best man speech" if you do a yahoo search for those words. The second secret to facing public speaking is accepting that you will be nervous and might sweat or whatever you're worried about doing, and that will be OKAY, no one is going to notice and even if they did, no one is going to care. That it why you must prepare to do this, not to wait for someone to prompt you (which they won't), and you must do it for your brother, as it will mean a lot to him. Don't let your fear hold you back from anything in life, and especially don't get used to "justifying" your fears (aka, not wanting to "contribute to the rich people's show) in ways that shield you from facing the real issues (in this case, your fears). You absolutely can do this, and you will prove a lot to yourself by doing that which you are most afraid of. Break a leg!

The only amusing one I've ever heard was a joke written up as if the best man was helping the groom pack up (for the big move, or whatever, ad lib that part). He found groom's diary, recounting the early days of their relationship. It was stuff like, So-and-so looked at me today. She smiled. God! She's so hot! I almost fell over. Super cheesiness to embarrass the groom (only the groom).
