How were they able to be distinguished if the sun wasn't created until the 4th day? Were they based on something other than the sun?

No bashing please.

It is valid to think the sun, moon, and stars were not created until the fourth day of creation.
So where did the light come from on day one, two, and three? the light of the world; Jesus (John 8:12).
Also notice that in the Holy of Holies, there was no lamp stand or light switch (ha ha). The Lord (Jesus Christ) was the light.
Further, when Moses came down from Mt. Sinai, he had to wear a veil for the light of his face was too bright for the people.

God defined time before the sun was visible in the sky. I like to think that on Day One was the Big Bang, after which God decided what would be day and night. Then He created the stars and planets, but since the earth was covered with an impenetrable cloud cover like Venus', there was no light on the earth. That was day two. On day three, we get land, plants, and some animals. The cloud cover was still thick, but light and darkness could still be distinguished. Finally, on day four, the cloud cover broke so that the sun and moon could be clearly seen.

That's my take... obviously, I think 'days' means 'time periods'.

Actually, the sun could be billions of years old.
Isn't it light, that is the subject you are pertaining to?

The heavens and earth existed long before the 6 day creation period.

When you read the Bible account on the creation, you have to imagine yourself on earth. Not like your in heaven looking down at the creating, but like you are on the earth looking up and around while it is being created. That helps in the understanding.

The Qur'an says that the earth was created in six "yaum." The Arabic word yaum is often translated as day, but it can also mean a long period of time. Keep in mind that the Bible has been translated in the same manner, and meanings have been lost. There is no definite answer on how exactly the universe was created. I guess we'll never really know. :)

The Bible says that to God a day is a thousand years and a thousand years is as a day.
