It's not true that you need to cook a burger until well done. Pink inside is ok if you like medium-rare to rare as long as your beef is of a good quality and has been properly refrigerated. 4 minutes a side will give you a nice juicy burger. Been cooking them this way for years and never got sick from bad beef.

Check out Americas Test Kitchen. They do a lot of recipies for Charcoal or Gas grilling. They publish "Cooks" and "Country Cooks" and also do a weekly TV program on PBS

When the grill has reached a very high temperature, You place the burgers close to the fire for 1 minute on each side grill open, Then move the burgers as far from the heat as you can and allow them to finish cooking from the smoke for 4-5 minutes on each side grill closed.

How Long To Grill Hamburgers

I have found that grilling them for 10 minutes on each side (5 minutes at a time; that is fliping it 3 times over the 20 minutes). I leave the grill shut for a short period of time.

You need to experiment a little.

Be sure not to have a grease flair-up!

Depends on a lot of things, namely how you would like them cooked and on the temperature of your grill. I usually go about 7 minutes per side. You know to flip it over once the juices start to come to the top. It really takes experimenting to get it perfect unfortunatley. Definitely keep the cover closed as much as possible so all the heat gets on the burgers.

All depend on the temperature of the grill, sear both sides ,lower the heat( raise the grill or lower the coals for charcoal) cook until the juices run clear. Open is ok so you can see and control flare ups, Closed for charcoal to get the smokey flavor, but keep checking . No one likes their burger burned, or rather no one with taste.

That depends on a lot of different things, like how hot is the grill and how close the meat is to the fire, etc. I like to keep the lid open if the fire is hot and I want to keep the burgers from burning. I can flip them when it looks like the outside is cooking too fast.

You need to cook hamburgers until there is no more pink inside. If the outside gets burned while the inside is still pink, then you need to turn the heat down and cook longer.
