What have you found are the best ways to calm yourself down and control your nerves?

I tend to get EXTREMELY nervous over small things, i shake, stutter, have a hard time breathing, almost pass out, etc. for some reason i dont have any ability to calm myself down or even tell myself its no big deal.

what has worked for you? any tips?

As a former paramedic it sounds like you suffer from severe anxiety. With that said I can tell you that the best way to calm down is to take long slow deep breaths. Did you know that oxygen is considered a drug by doctors. The reason is if you get to much Oxygen (I'm not getting real technical here) your red blood cells can't attach all the oxygen that's in your body and you feel faint (hyperventilate). But it also works in reverse...Ever wonder why smokers say a cig calms them down....it's because they are inhaling more O2 than normal. So just breath.

Usually knowing that it's not as bad as I anticipate helps a little...thinking about times in the past when I've overcome difficult obstacles makes me a little more optimistic about encountering new situations.

You might want to try some relaxation/visualization exercises--if you Google "visualization exercises," you should find some good ones.

If you're still feeling anxious, counseling/medication will help!

I have found that taking many tests over the years has calmed me down. It seems to need practice, at least for me.

id say that is a panic attack, breathe into a small paper bag, in and out, covering your mouth and nose, so that you breathe in some of your exhaled co2 and it will help. you also might need to see a specialist in this sort of problem to find out why you get so rattled.

I close my eyes and force myself to breath deeply. I imagine myself in a happy place. lame I know but it works for me!
