Because we are an overly sensitive and politically correct nation. We certainly wouldn't want the accused to get an infection at the IV site.

I read recently that before the first hanging in 35 years in Utah, they put non-skid strips down on the gallows stairs so that any people being hanged wouldn't injure themselves.

The arm of the condemned is swabbed with alcohol before the needle is inserted. Along with its antiseptic use, the alcohol also causes the blood vessels to rise to the skin's surface, making it easier to insert the needle. The needles and equipment used are also sterilized. One reason for this is because the needles are standard medical products that are sterilized during manufacturing. Also, there is a chance that the prisoner could receive a stay of execution after the needles have been inserted. Finally, it would also be a hazard for those handling unsterile equipment

Think about this...What if there is some sort of virus/ bacteria on the needle and they don't sterilize it. The lethal injection fails! Now we have essentially poisened the inmate who is still alive. This will lead to a huge lawsuit on the police department as well as a possible death pardon for the inmate. Huge disaster! So we might as well just sterilize the damn needle.

I agree with starrwoode. It's good practice to always use a sterile needle, every time. The needles come sterilized in the packages, so to use an unsterilized needle they'd specifically have to save one from a previous injection or something.

Though the person is not going to die of infection obviously. It is mandated by law that regardless of a criminal status they require the same sterile and ethical procedure as someone without criminal status.
