She is turning 17, she is not just my gf, but a very good friend of mine, we've been together about 4 months, and I want to buy her something nice, (not extreme - about $200 to $300). I'm not sure how she would feel about something nice, or even if it's good for me to spend much.

First of all .... I think this is setting the bar a little high for future gifts. Its the thought that counts. At least for me, I tend to appreciate a gift more when it comes from the heart rather than his wallet. Think of something she mentioned awhile back as just something that was apart of the conversation.... thats the ideal gift. For example, I was talking to this guy about the Disney movie Tarzan and how my mom couldn't find it anywhere for the last 3 years. So he went to EBay and bought it for me. When I opened it I was like ohmigod I can't believe you remembered this. It was by far the BEST gift ever!!

You've been going out for four months... but you have been a friend to her longer than that... so, I would say upping the amount of money you would spend on a gift is an acceptable thing to do... however, $200 to $300 may be a bit much on a relationship starting out. Get something simple and nice... something you know she would like but not something that would sap your cash flow. As the relationship grows so too should the expense of the gifts...
Just a recomendation though...

Do you have a talent?
Drawing, dancing, playing music, fishing, etc
Try one of those, and ask her to join.
Not everything has to be from the wallet, try from the HEART ^_~
1. Even if you are a bad artist, by canvas, paint, tools, and draw something that is symbolic of this strong relationship.
2. Create a silly movie of yourself... edit, and make it nice
3. bring her somewhere special---beach, hiking to a great place with a sunset view, pack a picnic dinner that the two of you prepared together... now that is something special.
4. Star gaze together
5. Buy a matching pair of something--- outfit
6. Shop for an outfit together
7. Blindfold her and take her to the beach, tell her to guess where she is, and suprise her, by bring snacks, blankets, and just look up at the sky and talk... get her a cut sweater if she's cold... a nice one from Nordstroms, Banana Republic, J. Crew, etc. (ask her if she likes it, she will adore it, and you'll get the admiration)
**Try something out-of-the-ordinary---jewelry, chocolate, flowers,etc...

She will be pleased my something you did from the heart, not just something you bought @ Tiffany's or off E-bay
Good luck, dude.
P.S. Be romantic and loving
^_^

Go to the mall or just a small boutique of something she likes. Take her with you to a mall sometime and listen for small hints like "o look at that isn't it cute" She may not give you those kind of hints she may just start looking at things and keep looking at them for a longer time than everything else. A necklace that is real gold might be nice. A nice gesture would definitely be taking her out to dinner for her birthday and maybe a movie. The gift doesn't have to be something expensive, it could be a cute shirt that you think she would like or something like that. I hope this helps. You could ask her too or her parents if you are completely lost.

How old are you? Because $200 is a lot to spend for one event!
I would suggest giving her something reasonable... $30-50 worth and then taking her to a nice restaurant or movie or just spend time together.
You could also do something creative like try to recreate her favorite TV show... like if it's a shopping one you could take her shopping for a new outfit!

That is a short time for dating to spend that much, assuming that you are young and probably will feel the financial crunch. a really good friend would not even accept it!If she has a car, A gas card is a practical and caring gift, I love get tin those puppies. spending Quality time with a person is very meaningful also.To sup rise someone with some thin they really need but can't afford expresses much more than someone trying to boost there own ego and feel like a big hero.

This was so cool this guy at work got his wife...I know you have a girl friend, but it would work this way to, get photos of places you both have been, and things you all did together, then take it to Kinko's they can arrange the photos in this really cool book, with a cover that has your girl's name and you can dedicate the book inside to her, and the guy at work, it was pictures of his daughter just at little over a year old, and he gave that to his wife, course that guy at work will walk on water forever cause it was just the coolest most touching personal thing, a picture really does have a 1000 words.

That is a lot of money for a 4 month relationship. How about a nice dinner, movie and a small piece of jewelry?

It's way too soon to be spending that kind of money on her - it may make her uncomfortable. As a parent myself, I know it would make me uncomforable in that situation. I think a flower delivery, followed by a nice dinner and maybe a movie or dancing would be most appropriate.
