My filthy friend Freddy says when he dies he wants to come back as a ladies bicycle saddle. I said I hope it's Margaret Rutherford's bike and now he's gone off reincarnation. Is it wrong to unsettle someones beliefs?

I love that and not many would get the Margaret Rutherford ref. No, you should always unsettle people's beliefs as it makes life fun. If you cannot take a ribbing, then you're being way too pious.

You're asking the wrong crowd if only because very few know who Ms Rutherford is.
But to your question, I'd have to say you may have done him a great service. People with those unsophisticated predilections are difficult to reform. If they get it into their little heads that they can return over and over, then they have even less incentive to stifle their vulgarity.

Perhaps if Freddy opts for one of those silly American fundamentalist sects, in which even bad manners will doom you to eternal fire, he might be motivated to rethink his position on, well, positions.

And no, in general it is not wrong to unsettle someone's beliefs. It is one of the few real bracing forms of entertainment left to those with an ounce of wit and two of education. In any case, should some churlish theologian disagree, try to plan your time so there's a bit left at the end for repentance.

By the way, the Yanks call them bicycle seats.

if YOU my dear, have the actual power to unsettle someone's beliefs, which i am sorry i doubt you do, but if you do, could you please come and spend an hour with me!

I will pay you $1,000 an hour and give you a list of about 100 wacky beliefs that do not contribute to my life or life yet persist in my belief system.

btw. I like the way you write! ur ideas jump around. Makes my brain work and wake up a bit.

No, because you didn't intend to put him off reincarnation- he obviously wasn't completely sure about the idea, if he was then you wouldn't have been able to put him off that easily. I think it's funny.

No, people should be strong enough in their belief to withstand even the most common of jokes. If they are not then their beliefs needed reexamining anyway.

Sounds like you did him a favor. His reincarnation could have been good or bad. I shudder to think about the bad.

it all comes back to the fact that " IT'S JUST A BILIEF" you can never be 100% sure. Some how it a choice we choose by ourselves, and if he really bilieves in it, then be it.

If they really believe in something, to the point that it's real to them, nothing you can do with change their minds. If they don't really beleive it in, maybe you just helped them discover what they really believe in.
