The truth is every dvd player has a 'used dvd' sensor. It's the RIAA's secret 'makeEMpayEVERYTIMEtheyWATCH' weapon. What happens is everytime a 'used' or 'previously viewed' dvd is inserted in the dvd player, the sensor makes a mental note of it. Once the sensor reaches it's programmed 'used/previously viewed' insertion limit, the dvd player starts skipping, freezing, behaving in such a way that one assumes it's dead and runs out to buy a new one. It's kind've a revenge tactic. If you would've just purchased a NEW dvd every time you played one, your DVD player would still be working.

If it's full of scratches then it will mean the laser has to work a little harder as it keeps skiping back and forth and this could wear it out faster, but it would still last for years. If there's no scratches then the same DVD can be viewed for a lifetime without degrading the player. Although all lasers wear out eventually.

Basically no. If they are dirty they can present problems to your DVD player. Just clean a bad DVD and generally it will play fine. If it has scratches in the DVD, it will prevent the player from reading the DVD properly.
