I think the best one is Miele -- they have a HEPA filter for the allergens that are otherwise circulated back into the air. But they are super expensive.

I believe the Kirby line is still the best of the pack out there, but you can easily find yourself spending over $800 for a decent one. The advantage with these is that they're easy to maintain. The company has been around for decades, and they teach you how to practically take it apart. That of course makes repairs easy. Plus, they're extremely lightweight, with some models coming with motorized propulsion - you can literally push it with your thumb.
Dyson would be the next best on my list coming in at $399 or $499 depending on the model you go with. I know quite a few people that have had one for more than a year, it still works great with no problems, and they just love it.
Haven't tried Oreck, but I'd make sure you've talked to someone that's had it for more than a year. The company just seems too bent on advertising, which usually isn't a good sign. Generally, word of mouth and minimal advertising is enough for a great product.

There are a couple of Real good vacuum cleaners amoung the best for general sale is Dyson, and Oreck
There are companies that specialize in direct sales because they sell very expensive high end Vacuums that are of excellent capability. Amoung them are Kirby and Rainbow.
Of course various Vacuums are better for various aplications. (like uprights do better on carpets and cannisters do better on hard floors)
