How do you spend your charity?

What is your favorite way to help your community? I don't have a lot of money, but I want to make where I live a better place. I do the obvious stuff; I donate blood, I drop my change in the little charity coin collectors...

What is a good way to give back?

Good for you! I'm proud to see somebody who really wants to help. Already you're donating blood, probably "whole blood". Can you go to the next step, pheresis? It takes a little longer, but you get nearly all your blood back. The Red Cross just spins out some of the platelets with a centrifuge, and uses them to help cancer patients. And you can come back and do the same thing again after just a couple of weeks to regain your platelet count.

You should influence the people around you to do the same. Start a volunteer program up within your workplace, school, church, etc,. Get sponsored to walk for a cause raise the money from your community. Susan Komen(breast Cancer), AIDS walk are just a couple that I participate in every year. But you will be more passionate about helping others if you figure out what it is that you are passionate about first.

I recommend going to people you know who work with or come into contact with people in need. I'm a teacher, and let me tell you, I see kids or parents in need all the time. Try asking people like social workers, volunteers, people at rec centers, churches, food banks, etc. I prefer to give directly to people as opposed to giving to organizations. The exception is, I don't give to panhandlers.

Bake some cookies or uild a wood project-- a bird feeder --Take it next door and say hello to your neighbor. If everyone did that--we'd need alot less official organized charity!

I give my extra money to find a cure for diabetes because my mom had diabetes!
