They got Al Capone on tax evasion. In order to encourage the Mafia etc. to pay taxes they supposedly can't share information. Under Bush I'm not sure much is private any more, though.

Working illegally is one crime. Tax evasion is a separate crime.

You bet some have vested interests. The federal government gets such taxes as are paid (including the Social Security suspense account), but the local communities and taxpayers separately pay for the services used like education and health care. Since these are federal laws we are talking about, and the federal government gets money and no pain, there isn't a lot of feeling there, usually, for enforcement. That is why the states and localities are passing laws ahead of the federal government.

However, the people who pay for these things are also the people who vote for federal representatives, as some are finally waking up to learn.

thats a silly question. Crossing the border is only illegal if you do it the wrong or ILLEGAL way. If a person wants to come to this country and sign up to work and pay taxes, they are abiding by the law.

Your question is no different than asking;" why do we have laws that make breaking into a house illegal, BUT>if you knock and are invited in, its ok?

As long as they file for that number and do things the right way it'd be okay. But when hey dont they reap our benefits. The border crossers are a bit beneficial to this countries economy. BUt not at the expense of others who are born and reaised here.

You realize, of course, that you're talking about the same government organization that sent out immigration and natualization forms to the 9/11 hyjackers / terrorists - almost a year after 9/11.
