Absolute rubbish and old hat.
Where's the individuality if everyone wears the same just like a boring school photo.
Also it doesn't take a photographer to take that type of pic. As long as you make sure the "shape" of the group is right then anyone can take that type of photo.
A skilled and innovative photographer would make an excellent photo of any group no matter what people were wearing.
I think the photographer is not skilled enough to take a decent shot and is just hedging his/her bets.

It is vital in a family portrait that all members are properly coordinated. The best clothing is casual, comfortable and somewhat on the ordinary side. This is not the time to wear trendy clothing, tight short skirts, short, sleeveless shirts, tank tops or chunky shoes.
If anyone in your family carries a little weight there are ways to be sure they look their best. First is to make sure the clothes fit and are not too tight or too large. Nothing is worse than a shirt too large and falling off the shoulders or a shirt too tight pulling across the tummy.
Some good suggestions are to wear v-necks or the collarless shirts so the neck is exposed. Do not wear turtlenecks that make double chins more prominent. Solid clothing is best with matching tops and bottoms both being a neutral color. No sleeveless shirts and the best is soft long sleeved looks that lay properly.
Best clothing for families is "chic casual" type. Khaki, denim, black or white, plain blouses, shirts or sweaters go well with long skirts or pants. No labels emblazoned on the fronts or symbols or tshirts that shout manufacturers names.
That said, one of the LOVELIEST family portraits I've ever seen was taken in a woodland setting (done at a local hiking park) with dappled light coming through the trees. The family was dressed casually (the father and adult sons wore Dockers) and some had lovely sweaters (but NOT jeans/t-shirts). The photos were STUNNING!
Also, consider having a shot done in black & white - it can be breathtakingly beautiful if done corrrectly.

Well, with everyone wearing the same thing, it will make it easier to control the lighting and exposure. My whole family just got together a month ago for a portrait that I took, in a lovely gazebo in a garden that happened to be right at the hotel where we were staying. But eveyone wore what they wanted, so half of us were dressed nice, and half a bit too casual. Since I'm the one doing the printing, I had to work it out so the faces came out light enough to see, without the white t-shirts looking way too bright. At the very least, people should not wear white for portraits, unless they are getting married!

Talk it over with the family. Your paying this person to take the picture you should get what you want. your family has to live with the picture not the photographer. I'm a studio photographer and I work lighting and setting around what my customer wants any good photographer will.
I also agree with "Jusme"

well if that is the look that is wanted and everyone is ok with it, go for it, sounds like a casual look, and if it is a pro photographer giving the idea he/she would know what works from experience.....it is nice to dress up though but it all depends on the look wanted and agreed upon with everyone involved---good luck

I think every family member should wear what he/she likes best, and bring out the uniqueness of themselves.
Your family is not a school that requires everyone to wear a school uniform. =)

I'd prefer impromtu pics at a family picnic, barbecue, or other gathering. Everyone being who they are are. Who wants to look at one pic, where everyone is dressed the same, and some idiot "so called PRO" said, "OK, everyone say cheese".
