I want to become Wiccan, but I don't know where to start, so I decided to start by understanding what it is. If anyone has information beyond this question, I'd love for you to tell me, or give me helpful books/websites, whatever.

You've already been given a lot of great answers on the handfasting question. But may I make a personal observation? I've been to many handfastings. The setting can be anywhere the couple wish it to be. In fact except for the hands being tied together, everything else is pretty much up to the couple. Handfastings aren't as formulaic as modern weddings.
As for your desire to be Wiccan, the best way to learn is to talk to other Wiccan/Pagans. I have many years experience and I'm always willing to answer questions. That's what we did in the old days before the internet. Good luck, and Blessed Be.

The traditional Wiccan handfasting (marriage) ceremony is normally conducted at the full moon, and the circular area in which the two people being handfasted should have plenty of flowers around- particularly those that are preferred by the couple, and, of course, roses if they are in season. Dress is up to the couple. It may be formal attire, or it may be something that is more fitting to a Wiccan ceremony, or it may be something they are comfortable wearing at such an important ceremony that marks a milestone in their life.

It is a wedding ceremony for the Wiccan faith.
If you want to learn about Wicca, pick up one of Scott Cunningham's books. Most honest and informative. Read and educate yourself before you make any decisions.

Well, you need to educate yourself on the topic first.

Go to www.salemtarot.com. There is a forum or "journal" that you can participate in to ask your questions regarding Wicca.

If I were you, I wouldn't go around announcing your intent to the world either. A lot of young people join Wicca because they are lonely and feel that they need something to belong to. However, if this describes you, announcing that you are studying Wicca will not better you situation. In fact, I can guarantee it will only make it worse.

Learn before you commit to anything. Wicca isn't something you just decide to do.
