Typically, 5.56 or .223 caliber rifles are considered "OK" for SWAT entry weapons. Has the .308 or 7.62mm become "viable" for entry? Are there any particular bullet weights preferred?

Most swat teams only use 308 for sniper teams, they use 5.56, 9mm, 10mm 12 gauge, or .45 acp for entry teams as they don't want over penetration, and these guns offer less recoil than a full sized rifle cartridge offering follow up shots. They typically use glaser or hollow point rounds to further minimize penetration.

Sniper yes.
Entry teams...hell no.
.308 is excellent for sniper teams, but most weapons chambered for .308 are single shot/bolt action and have relatively long barrels. Not good for entry.
I think most of the tactical entry community has actually gone away from the H&K MP5 (9mm) since a lot of high risk entry subjects have either body armor, or are hyped up on drugs, so 9mm has no effect.
I see almost all the bigger city SWAT teams carrying Colt M4 Commandos, which are chambered for 5.56mm NATO ball(or .223 caliber for civilians). They're the same weapons most of the military carries except that the barrel is shorter in the SWAT versions. They also have the same optics the military is using (ACOG and MARS IR).
5.56mm ball is really good too, because it leaves an entry hole less than the size of a dime, but since it's a "tumbling" round (when it strikes the subject, the round tumbles end over end) itleaves an exit hole the size of a small Casaba melon.
Just a little info to help out.
Real quality stuff.

HK MP5 is great for clearing rooms. its Knock down power is not super considering its a 9mm. Most of our guys are using .223. I trust a 7.62x39 more than any other round out..that's just y personal preference. You will never go into any battle in a war or any gun fight were there are automatic weapons were no person on the opposing side is holding one of the most feared weapons of all time....the Russian AK-47. You take take cover from the HK P5 fairly easy because its a weak 9mm round..the 7.62x39 is H E L L. I wish all of us would just go to a cut down version of the AK-47 for clearing rooms. Entry is not really ever a problem. After you get past what is known as the Fatal funnel. When we clear i want to know that if I shoot a person they will stay down. I know this fro m7.62x39. never been sure about .223 or 9mm.

Hmmmm, as you say the .5.56mm is the current cailber of choice. The .308 win is a bit overpowered for CQB entry. Springfield Armory has offered a cut down SOCOM 16 version of its M1-A for just the work your asking about. Over time it may become a SWAT choice for firepower. Only question is, do want to spend two grand on it?

Black Sabbath has given you good info.

Any tactical entry team has to be concerned with dynamic entry in often confined spaces. Long guns are therefore ruled out. Penetration is a concern as you don't want a round penetrating he wall behind the target and hitting a child in the next room.

Shorter weapons with hollow point rounds or slugs are generally the norm.
