Why do you need to equal the field? I have a 14 year old declawed cat (long story, bad decision) and she always makes the other cats (from kittens) respect her totally. In fact, the two that are 3x her size still think she is bigger than her. She slaps, she is fine. I have never had a problem with her needing the playing field evened.

I once had a teeny female kitten and a big male cat. And boy, did he love to bully her. But she grew up and fought back. Now, we have 3, and I'm having a ball. Free entertainment.

Cats grow up fast, and it should equal itself out. But with one being declawed and one not being declawed, I'm not sure about that. Might want to declaw the kitten before she grows up or ask a vet or other cat owner with the same situation.

Don't worry about it!

Especially since the one with claws is the young un.

The older kitty can still swat the kitten and whap him/her upside the head if appropriate, and none of the regular feline dominance moves require claws.

Hopefully the older cat will take on a parental role towards the kitten (if she's female), or a mentoring role (if he's male) and the kitten will accept a subordinate role in the family.

If not, you'll still probably find that the older one can handle the kitten with no trouble.

Please don't declaw the other kitten, just keep his or her nails trimmed. At one point I had an adult declawed cat and a crazy kitten who wasn't declawed and I truly didn't have any problems.

For reasons not to declaw, please visit:

There's a section there about declawed & non-declawed cats living together.
