I've had the cat for almost two years, and he has never been sick before. He is still eating, but throws up almost every day. His stool is very liquidy and yellow in color. He also doesn't seem to be cleaning himself as good as he did before. I have not changed to a new type of food or a new type of litter. I change the litter every day. I have another orange Tabby who seems fine, and I also have a dog that seems OK. I am trying to avoid a huge vet bill if at all possible, any ideas what the problem may be?

Sorry, I forgot to mention a few things...Really I don't mind the bill, I was hoping to avoid an emergency bill, since my vet can't get him in until next week. He is strictly an indoor cat. He is still using the litter box, and is urinating. He is drinking more fluid than comes up, so I know he is passing liquid. He is a very picky cat and only eats dry food, and has never liked anything else even when offered over the past two years. Thank you all for your responses.

Take him to the vet ASAP! Why haven't you already?

Various things could be causing this from something very simple to a serious condition, how do you know what the vet bill will be if you haven't even taken the cat to the vet. Once the vet diagnoses the problem he'll be sure to tell you the cost to treat it. That's when you should decide whether or not to take on a huge vet bill, but until then the cat needs your help. Don't prolong seeking medical help for the cat just because you're assuming it's gonna cost you big time!

OR

Do nothing, the cat dies, and it cost you not one red cent!

there are soo many reasons that may be causing these problems and this is why you should see the vet, if you delay then you may have to get the pet seens as an emergency and this would cost you even more because they might have to hospitalize the pet and get x-rays and more tests. The pet is not getting any better so it is time for the vet to see it, usually if it is a hairball or a stomach bug it will last no more than two days but this has been a long time. The pet could have ingested something, have parasites or there may be a serious internal problem.

First, if it takes you vet a week to see your "sick" cat then find another vet.

Second, you need to take him to an emergency clinic. Since these symptoms lasted over 48 hours they could mean many things. Such as infection to cancer to renal failure to poisoning. Since you have noticed him grooming habits have changed this could be serious.

Take him to a emergency clinic NOW... they will be able to treat the symptoms of diarrhea and vomitting....

Keep your appointment with your vet who can find out the cause of the symptoms... if it's not Monday call your vet back and explain the severity of the situation so that they can "work" you in their schedule. If they are still uncoperative find another vet ASAP.

I had the same problem with my cat and it's important for him to see a vet soon cause cats can become dehydrated very quickly. He may have a hyperthyroidism condition like my cat had and there is a medication to treat this if that is the problem. There are all kinds of problems though than can cause these symptoms so get with your vet as soon as possible.

Yeah, you are being a cheap, loser owner and should not have a pet.
If you are too cheap to take the cat to the vet, turn it in at a shelter. They may have to euthanize it, but it is more than you are doing!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope if you had vomiting and diarrhea for a week you would seek medical attention.

I really find it hard to fathom that in all this week you could not get the cat into the vet. Yeah, it has to be next week now..it is the weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think a trip to the emergency vet is in order!!!!!!

umm it sounds like it might be a parasite. Definitely take him to the vet as soon as you can! treating a parasite is not going to be a very big vet bill, they will just give him an antibiotic.

also you might want to get your other pets checked out, or at least keep an eye on them because usually things like that are contagious..
good luck I Hope you're kitty is ok!!

Gastro-intestinal blockage.

Inflammatory bowel disease.

Cancer.

Poison.

Any of a number of other ailments, mostly serious.

Get kitty to a vet pronto! Find a way to pay the bills. You took on this responsibility when you adopted your cat.

Could be many things, go to a vet! Giardia can cause those symptoms, is it an outdoor cat? Or could it have eaten a recently poisoned mouse/squirrell? Licked up some anifreeze? Eaten medicine or chocolate?

Could be a food allergy. You have to take the cat to the vet. One week was way too long to wait.
