Put your $9000 in the bank and:
1. figure out what kink of riding you want to do
a. twisties: crotchrocket/really fast/really uncomfortable/really short rides(100miles or less-usually)/no passengers is best-it's really designed for one person
b. cruiseing-fun/slow/poor handling/great for passengers/rallies,poker runs etc.
c. sport tourers: BMW/Honda PC800/ST1100/Yamaha FJR1300--handle well/fast(but not like the crotchrocket)/passenger friendly/more comfort than any above
d. road bike: Goldwing/Harley dresser--most comfort/long rider/great for passengers/most expensive

1. after you've figured this out then buy a cheap used bike!!!!!!!
2. reason: if you like it you'll find that you(almost) never would chose the bike you have if you had it to do over again. and it's REALLLLLY expensive to change if you have a new/expensive bike. NOw you can sell the cheappy for as much or nearly as much as you paid and step into the one you, now know, you like.
or.
3. You find that it just doesn't really do it for you, but you've got this 9, 10, 11, 000 bike that you're about to take a real bath on(they depreceate),financing is tough on a used bike.

I live in NY and have been riding for years. I don't know how old you are or what kind of bike you're looking for.

There are touring bikes. Sport Bikes and Cruisers. I am an old dead guy so I ride a cruiser , a Honda 1100 Magna...you sit back and cruise. I used to ride a CB750 F which was a sport bike.

But it is a different ride. Personally, the guys who have these cafe racers that zip in and out of traffic at high speeds are assholes and do the sport a dis-service and they clearly do not care about safety, teir own or mine.

I plan to get a Gold wing in a few years when I go cross country with my woman and she said she would go if I got a touring bike...

I favor Hondas...because they don't break...you ride them...and ride them.

Personally, as a new rider, Figure out what you want (you probably have a good idea already) and get something conservative...whatever it is. Don't fear riding but you can get killed easily ..usually because of the assholes in the cars who don't see you.

Always respect that between STEEL and FLESH.....STEEL ALWAYS WINS. So don't mess with cars. I wouldn't suggest you spend 9 grand on your first bike unless you already are trying to keep up with your pals. Get something 4-6 years old...there are some fine machines in all ranges...The newest isn't the best.

See if you really like the sport and then maybe trade up when you get used to the whole idea of what you want to do.

Like I said...I like the dependability of Hondas in all case(yes, I've had others)

Hope this helps.

A honda CBR 600 is a good reliable bike for beginners and people who have been riding for awhile. Look at Honda.com, Yamaha.com or Suzuki.com for other options.
