In Mexico, "gringo" means "American". "Guero (-a)" is a white person, or light-skinned person. And to be called a "guero" is a compliment, gringo is okay.

Not too many gringos understand other languages.

Few GRINGOS understand another languages. But really do they even care? They think that the USA is the only country that exists. Now if you really want to have some fun, get 3 gringos, give them a map an tell them to find random countries, watch them go crazy by looking for Argentina in Asia. Make some popcorn, sit down and have hours of fun.

I think those who work in Mexico like in the factories speak some spanish.

Also the "gringos" who work in some amusement parks or hotels, some of them speak spanish, u know for the hispanic tourist.

I would say about 25%, besides not all the people in usa is 100% gringa but there are a lot of hispanic people.

PS--I, personally, don't find "gringo" offensive, I think it's lost it's pejorative meaning over time. I refer to myself as a gringa because it's more accurate and specific than "estadounidense," "norteamericana," and certainly more than "americana." But usually, I just say, "soy de los EEUU" instead. Or, in English, I refer to myself as "from the US." But I guess I can see how some would find it offensive still.

yo pienso que hay demaciadas personas que hablan otras idiomas. lo que pasa es que no le importa tanto a la otra gente y por eso no preguntan para ver si alguien entiende otra idioma. Yo hablo espanol y ingles y soy gringa. dure 8 meses para aprender espanol y me sirve bien mucho. to all of you out there who say it is too hard to learn a new language, submerse yourself in it, that makes it next to impossible to not pick up something.

BTW, "gringo" isn't always used in a peyorative way. Mostly, we (in Peru) call gringo any white person ... specially blonds ... there are also "gatos gringos" (gringo cats) hehehe because of their color
