Most of the eggs yoiu buy in a store are from chickens kept in a cage. The chickens never see a rooster after they are hatched in an incubator. (The hatchery will sex the day old chicks especially for comercial egg producers who would not want to raise a bunch of roosters given space and financial constraints). If you buy free range eggs you might get fertilized eggs- if the farmer keeps roosters with the chickens. Even if you get fertilized eggs- the chances of seeing an embyo develope are slim especially if you keep the eggs in the fridge.

Unfertilized.... a fertilized egg produces a chick. Chickens make eggs as a natural product of their bodies.

Generally speaking, store bought eggs are unfertilized, however, some health food and/or mom and pop shops do sell fertilized eggs, but they will say clearly on top of the carton whether they are or aren't fertilized. So... do a quick glance at the top of the carton and if it doesn't say fertilized and cost $4.50 a dozen, you're in good shape.
