I had a similar problem in that I owned a Ford Escort...
There are rubber straps with hooks on either end that work really well, you just need some place on the car to attach them..The Escort had water run off rails on the roof, I drilled holes. Then used climbing rope to tie down the front and back of the Kayak to the bumpers.. Tie the Kayak to the corners of the bumper so it doesn't shift left and right...
If you have a white water Kayak it should be a piece of cake, mine is a 14"6" ocean Kayak...Have fun!

go buy some cheaper water noodles (the foam tubes you can play with in the pool). use the noodles to cushion the kayak on top of the car. now, using any place to tie a rope on the kayak, tie the kayak to the bumper and maybe through the windows of the civic.
it can be done. rope and noodles.

the honda should be small enough to put in the kayak, or if you put it sideways you can make a little airplane.......ok they sell roof racks, or if you're cheap put some kind of cushion on the roof like pool noodles then strap around going through the doors (while open) and also strap from front of car to front of kayak and the same for the back
