wikipedia:

Currently, the function of the appendix, if any, remains controversial in the field of human physiology. The wall of the appendix contains lymphatic tissue that may be part of the immune system for making antibodies. There have been cases of people who have been found, usually on laparoscopy or laparotomy, to have a congenital absence of their appendix. There have been no reports of impaired immune or gastrointestinal function in these people.

It has no purpose, that is why when you have symptoms similar to appendicitis, the normal procedure is an appendectomy. Regardless if the appendix is infected or not, it can come out.

People of any age can get appendicitis and the pain normally starts toward the belly button and moves to the lower right quad. Sometimes when the physician presses on the lower left, pain is felt in the lower right. Fever, nausea etc are also involved with appendicitis. Individuals might only feel a tiny, dull pain until the appendix bursts then there is the onset of extreme abdominal pain.

If the appendix bursts, you have a VERY serious issue on your hands. Basically the patient has an infection in the abdominal cavity because the appendix bursts and the yucky stuff has nowhere to go and the outcome is sepsis or worse if it is not treated immediately.

Hope you feel better soon.

One widely accepted theory is that the appendix, like wisdom teeth, was used when we ate a lot more roughage in our diets. Like leaves and grasses which require more chewing and more digesting than the foods we eat today. Currently , the appendix seems to serve no useful purpose. Removing it, as in an appendectomy, does not affect our body at all.

The appendix contains lymphoid tissue that is part of your immune system. It's really very similar to your lymph nodes, and does a pretty good job of filtering the blood.

You can live without it. However, it does have it's uses. Doctors use to say tonsils weren't necessary, and now they are rarely removed, compared years ago when mine were yanked out. The appendix is useful and beneficial, just not critical.

The last I heard Doctors agree the appendix was something useful in earlier evolution but has no purpose now.

they took out a little pouch at the end of your small intestine that likes to just sit there and do nothing until something gets stuck in it and it gets infected and you have severe pain and can die if you don't get it taken out. It probably was good for something at one time or maybe in twenty years we'll find out that that's where our soul is and we never should have taken them out of anyone ever. But for right now we don't think they do anything.
