LA TRINIDAD, Benguet - A farmer's daughter from Kibungan town who went to work as a maid in the United Arab Emirates in April has been jailed for accidentally sitting on the Koran.
Provincial officials said the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has learned that a Shariah court sentenced Serafina Toyan, 26, to a one-month’s jail term on July 18 and also ordered her deported after serving her sentence.
But in a letter faxed to the provincial capitol here, Toyan said she did not notice the Koran when she sat on a bed to rest, because the Muslim holy book had been covered by a blanket.
She said this angered her employer, Jumaa Jamil Bakket Junaibi, who immediately took her to a police station for investigation.

This is another ugly side of Islam. If Islam was true then it would be true whether someone abused its holy book or not. If Islam was true then it would stand up to every harsh criticism you can imagine. It would not need human protection, it would be protected by God. And about all, its believers would be the very models for mercy and forgiveness. Sorry, but this is just another reason to reject the thing outright.

Wow. The world has really gone mad. Really. The lady didnot realize that she was sitting on their holy book. Does that make her a criminal? I doubt that seriously.
But, if they let her stay in the country without getting deported, she should count her lucky stars that she is out of jail, did not get deported, get murdered and never go back to that employer (or work with anyone of that faith for safety reasons) and realize that the world is both a beautiful and dangerous place.
This story is sad. Very f@cking sad.

Wow, I can't believe the lack of reasoning we have in this world. Do you people really think that every single act a government does is going to be according to the religion? Just because some stupid gov't in the UAE does something isn't always because Islam tells them to do it. American doesn't always do everything Christian, the Middle East doesn't always do everything Islamic.
Open your eyes people and think for yourself. It's not the religion that's stupid, it's these government people who take things too far. Yes, it was something stupid that they did, but there's no need to bash a religion based on it. I'm pretty sure the fastest growing religion in the world has some sense of justness, reason and logic to it.

Well if this happened in America she would of been found innocent because she sat on the blanket and not the Koran.

It is wrong to sentence a person if he/she was unaware of the crime in question! besides, we don't know the full story so we can only speculate.
Not long ago in America .. a "colored" person was jailed for sitting on a "white" rail car.
Humans ey!

the perfect metaphor for all fundamentalist "thinking", everywhere. instead of truly being reflective, they are reflexive. i.e. the rule is.....and they automatically, unthinkingly follow it, whether it is rational or not. this is perfect for people with an "entry level" i.q. unfortunately, many "innocent others" suffer because of their lobotomized approach to life. normally, we all try to be as tolerant of others and their beliefs as much as possible.right? :-), but this type of mindset "really pushes the buttons", does it not?

Whoa.......I've accidentally sat on my Bible in church (went to go to the bathroom and left it sit in a chair in the pews) but I doubt God would punish me for that....so why jail someone for an accidental thing?

These UAE people and their f*****g Sharia nonsense are really sick. How do they expect the world at large to appreciate them and their culture if they persist in showing so much rigidity, so much intolerance

It's about time. Scripture sitting has been getting way out of hand.
Honestly, though, when I talk about how insane faith is, this is exactly what I mean.
