Ignorance has always held progress back. Somehow we have moved forward but more slowly then we could have if there was no religions.

"With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion." ~ Steven Weinberg
Christianity suffered a severe setback in the Age of Enlightenment, when secular humanism, and concepts of the innate rights of man succeeded in pushing back the oppressive ignorance and reign of terror that was Christianity throughout the Dark Ages. Now, that oppressive ignorance and terror is on the verge of making a comeback... starting in the USA.
Christian 'Dominionists' have largely usurped the local level political apparatus of the Republican Party, and are engaged in a sub rosa process to politically motivate moderate Christians under the false cover of religious issues such as morality and family values. The goal is nothing less than the takeover of all elective offices in the USA.
Their doctrine comes from the Bible, starting with the term 'dominion' at Genesis 1:28... “And God said unto them, [Adam and Eve] Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have DOMINION… over every living thing.” They interpret DOMINION as: “... a supremacy in determining and directing the actions of others or in governing politically, socially, or personally.”
They want to remake the USA as a theocracy... and they are succeeding.
Wake up. Take a stand. Do something... for we are sowing the seeds of our own destruction, while these religious nut-jobs are awaiting God's demolition job.
Be afraid... be very afraid.

some worship God some worship the devil, and some worship science. For the most part everyone thinks one of these are true. so let the ones that worship God study and learn about him and take part in all God has to offer. and the ones that believe in the devil do the same. and also the ones that believe in since. at the end of life we will all know the truth.are we can look for the truth while we are on earth and be open minded until we find the truth. I hope everyone finds the truth they are looking for and i have included this site as a place to start for some and a place to end for others that thank they know what is true good link http://the-heavenly-home-page.blogspot.com/

No offense, but this is just the latest example of the current Israel-Lebanon situation bringing the anti-religious bigots out of the woodwork again.
It's given them "cause" to accuse religion of all this violence and division and what not.
My friend, the earthly institution responsible for more violence, death, persecution, and division than everything else put together is The Secular State.
Horrendous atrocities have been committed in its name -- Communism and Nazism are just two examples.
I am VERY tired of people blaming every negative thing under the sun on religion. It's so ignorant -- and so bigoted and prejudiced -- it isn't funny.

Yes since the beginning of time we have killed and maimed each other because of religious beliefs, I believe that religion creates even more differences between individuals and people allign to their own group believing that they are the superior group, which in turn gives violent people a good excuse to do what they want which is to kill.

I would like to point out that we have from the beginning of time also killed each other for lust, greed, spite... NOT all religions are so "warlike" if you look at many eastern religions and if you look at the teachings of Jesus peace is what is preached... it truly seems that it is our own twisted selves that end up killing... many relate this to the "fallen" aspect of mankind also attributed to the devil... Very good question though....

If the last 8,000 years of religious drivel hasn't killed us off, we'll probably be OK in the future too.
Sure, people will say anything not to have their sacred cows demeaned or disbelieved (same thing in their minds).
If we are to be doomed by anything, it will only be because of us being deficient in intelligence. That is humanity's biggest problem.

That's why Jesus preached against religion and those who would subjugate others in the name of religion. He even went as far to call the religous leaders of his day, "Like white washed sepulchers, full of dead mens bones". God gave Jesus as the ulitmate sacrifice for our sins. He made it so easy, but humans are the ones who add things and make everything complicated.

Good question.
I think once religion is gone, then time spent hating non-beleivers can be spent questioning our existence, and maybe even getting along.
I doubt religion is as ingrained in us as fighting, look at animals.
