I have 2 cats, one of which i've had for 2 years and used to live outdoors (she was a stray) but was fixed and dewormed shortly after I got her. I got another cat a year ago and he has never been outside a day in his life (I know this because the other cat is his mother and he's been with me since birth). But for some reason, he has worms! I plan to take him to the vet, but I don't understand how an indoor cat got worms? All he eats is cat food. He couldn't have caught it from his mother (who never even seemed to have worms ever); she was dewormed before he was born and has been an indoor cat for 2 years. So how is this even possible?!

Your pet can get these worms from a variety of places - mother's milk, eating fleas, infested dirt, etc. It is a good idea to get your puppy or kitten tested ASAP, and your adults tested every year along with the physical. Always test before treating. Some ideas on worming using herbs and other gentle things are listed below - I would always try the natural way before resorting to the chemical, unnatural way. Never ever EVER go buy a chemical wormer without asking your vet - those wormers sold in stores can kill your pet as easily as it kills the worms.

Did your cats have fleas at one time? If so that is the reason your cat got worms, they eat fleas while grooming themselves and the fleas carry certain types of worms inside thier bodies that are passed on when ingested.

It's possible he ate a flea! I'm not exactly sure HOW they get worms, just that they can. If he ate something and ingested the larvae, it's possible. I'm glad your taking him to the vet soon, but that's an excellent question for the doc.

Good luck.

Are you talking about tapeworms? (They look like little pieces of dried white rice.) Tapeworm larvae are carried by fleas. All a cat has to do is ingest one infected flea during grooming, and they will get tapeworms. Even indoor cats can pick up a few fleas here and there!

Worms are caused by fleas. Fleas are everywhere in the summer; they can get tracked in by another pet owner or from someone walking in from the outdoors...flea finds kitty and kitty gets worms.

Fleas could pass around worms, but also if your cat likes eating bugs (flies, spiders, etc) then that's another way to get it.
