oatmeal, porridge, cream of wheat, grits, shredded wheat, and gruel? this question sometimes makes me cry inside... really, i just need an ANSWER....

it's all in the consistency. Gruel is soupy. Oatmeal is like the stuff you had as a kid, porridge is thick and lumpy. Cream of wheat is real thin, grits are thick, and shredded wheat is cereal.

Oatmeal (oats), cream of wheat (wheat), and grits (corn) are different grains. Porridge is a common name for cooked oatmeal. Gruel is a very thin porridge.

oatmeal is small flakes, porridge is grain size granuals (scotland/ireland) grits is white corn from the south, shredded wheat is just that, wheat that is shredded, and gruel is like mush..discusting soft texture, watery cream of wheat.

oatmeal and porridge are the same thing. shredded wheat is just that. grits are, well, grits. and gruel can be anything unappetizing. oh...nevermind.
