Bought 4 dvd's off Ebay, used (released less than 2 yrs ago), original, not copies or bootlegs, appear to be in pretty good shape, but they won't operate reliably. Two of them have a few light scratches and I have rubbed all with a soft cloth. Sometimes I lock up on the menu, other times I can get off the menu, but the episode (it's a tv series dvd set) will lock up, freeze or skip. I don't have this problem with other dvds in my collection. I am wondering if there is some new technology on DVD's that isn't communicating with my dvd player (about 4 years old). Also, this is my first purchase of tv dvd's-everything else I have is movies, if that matters.

It sounds like the discs are scratched, damaged, or dirty.

I have an extensive DVD collection, and this is the best trick I've learned for cleaning off discs. First, get some toothpaste. Put little dots of toothpate around the center ring of the DVD, then get it wet. (we're talking about the readable side of the DVD here - the shiny side, not the label) Getting DVDs wet doesn't hurt 'em. Next, use a finger to rub the toothpaste on the DVD from the center ring outward - not in circles. Give the whole disc a good rubdown this way, thoroughly but gently, then rinse it and dry it on the softest, lint-free-est cloth you can find. This will clean AND even out minor scratches.

After using this method, you _will_ see fine lines on the DVD in the direction you were rubbing, but this won't affect how the disc plays.

I've had very, very good luck with this technique, and I've never seen a disc be damaged by it.

If this doesn't work, complain to the person you bought them from!

There isn't any technology on newer discs that would prevent them from being played by an old player. However, some older players are not very good at reading discs with even very minor damage. The Pioneer player I have now can play discs well even if they're fairly badly damaged, and I've heard that other players are even better. If other discs don't work in your player, it's probably time to get a new one.

Good luck!

Have you tried them in another DVD player to see if the problem is the same. If you have used them in another player and they work fine you probably need a new DVD player then don't waste any money on trying to repair them. If they don't work in the other player then most likely the discs are the problem and you could try to repair them, you can get stuff to remove the scratches and clean the laser lens at walmart ,target etc. Maybe the light scratches combined with a dirty laser could be causing you grief. Good luck.

use tooth paste to buff out those scratches. put just a little bit on the shiny side, and rub it all around. it works. toothpaste is a minor abrasive, it will cure you dvd's of all corroded scratches. also, there may be something wrong with your dvd player, or your player's connection to the tv. i very well think it could be your dvd player's laser reader drive.

try loading them on your computer if you have a dvd drive. and walmart has a dvd player that will play everything except divx for about $30.00, and one that will play everything including divx for around $70.00. Also try playing your dvd's on a friends player and see if they work in it.
